Dominik Szoloszlai scored an unforgettable brace as he led Hungary to qualify for Euro 2024.
The Liverpool midfielder, wearing the captain’s armband, was instrumental as he helped his country to a memorable win over Montenegro at the Puskas Arena. The three points, combined with Serbia’s draw with Bulgaria, saw Hungary claim top spot in Group G
The Reds midfielder saw his team suffer a first half setback as Serbia took the lead through Slobodan Rubezic. However, Szoboszlai proved to be Hungary’s hero after the interval, which will come as little surprise to Liverpool fans.

Midway through the second half, the 23-year-old jinked his way into the box and around a couple of defenders before firing low into the far corner. This sparked jubilant scenes in Budapest, but Szoboszlai was far from finished.
Almost immediately from the restart, the skipper found himself in possession, charging up the left flank. He played a one-two with striker Martin Adam, darting into the box to slot the ball in at the near post. His two goals in as many minutes transformed the game for Hungary, who eventually ended the tie as 3-1 winners, courtesy of a late goal from Adam Nagy.
It was an all-action display from Szoboszlai, who finished the match with the most accurate passes (71), chances created (3), successful dribbles (4) and duels won (13).
Szoboszlai has never played at a major international tournament, having been ruled out of Euro 2020 through injury, and was quick to celebrate qualification. The Liverpool midfielder accepted a shot palinka as he joined Hungarian fans in the stands, though his reaction suggested that the drink wouldn’t have been his first choice.
After reaching such highs on international duty, Liverpool will hope Szoboszlai can continue his goal scoring form when he returns to Premier League action against Manchester City, next weekend.
