Fan group The 1878s are encouraging fellow Everton supporters to express their discontent towards the Premier League with flags, banners and specially produced cards during Sunday’s home game against Manchester United.
While they are also planning to fly a plane with a message over the Etihad Stadium the previous day when the eyes of the world will be watching Manchester City’s match against Liverpool.
At the time of publication, The 1878s have raised £40,000 for protests against Everton’s immediate 10-point deduction handed to them by an independent commission last Friday after they were found to have breached the Premier League’s financial rules. The penalty – which is the most severe in the 135-year history of English top flight football – was described as being “disproportionate and wholly unjust” by the club’s interim chief executive Colin Chong.

In addition to flags and banners, which are in the process of being made for Sunday to be displayed behind the goals in the Gwladys Street and Park Ends of Goodison Park, the 1878s are producing enough protest cards for everyone in the stadium to have one, which they are being encouraged to raise on two occasions – when the two teams line-up on the pitch before kick-off as the Premier League anthem is played and in the 10th minute of the game to signify the 10 points that Everton have been deducted.
There will be a distribution/pick-up point to collect the cards and the group are calling for volunteers to help out around the ground to hand them out and ensure the visual message presented by Evertonians is as powerful as possible.
A spokesperson from The 1878s has also explained why the decision to fly a plane over Manchester City’s game against Liverpool on Saturday rather than the Everton match with Manchester United on the Sunday. They said: “We have had a lot of requests asking for a plane to be flown over Goodison on Sunday, with a message to the Premier League.
“Due to our kick-off time, it will be dark. So instead a plane will fly over the Etihad on Saturday for Manchester City versus Liverpool which will be watched by millions around the world.”
The group would like to thank everyone who has helped them or donated including Eddie Carter, @theesk, @nychyl and @tarscouseki2. Their spokesperson added: “We will continue to consult fans on further atmosphere plans which will make use of the funds and helping with a push against the Premier League for a reduction, or change to the unprecedented and overly severe penalty handed out to Everton Football Club that has as a result, punished the fans.”
