Pickford features in England draw and disappointment for Mykolenko
Jordan Pickford played in England's final Euro 2024 qualifying match this evening, saving a controversial penalty though conceding the rebound. At least the Three Lions remained unbeaten in their campaign.
It wasn't such a good night for Vitalii Mykolenko unfortunately. The full-back missed out on the finals as his country were held to a 0-0 draw in what was effectively a play-off with Italy for second spot in the same group as England.
The Ukrainians were denied a penalty in stoppage time, much to their anger, when Chelsea's Mykailo Mudryk was visibly clipped in the box.
Michael Ball column: I'm still in disbelief at the Everton points deduction - the Premier League is not fit for purpose
"Like pretty much every Everton supporter, I was stunned when the news dropped on Friday morning confirming we had been docked 10 points.
"Even as I sit here now, the news hasn’t quite sunk in. I’m still in disbelief at the punishment imposed by the independent commission.
"But this is Everton, and we have always been treated harshly. Those who had concerns about the process were clearly right to be worried.
"For me, being deducted 10 points feels incredibly excessive. Granted, a breach has occurred, but to be treated the way we have been is just wrong."

John Aldridge column: Everton were a sitting duck - now I want to see if the Premier League really mean business
"I don't really know to what extent Everton have done anything wrong. If you have done something wrong you've got to get penalised, but it has to be said - their punishment is excessive.
"The one thing I can say to Evertonians is that the team won't go down - they're too good even with the loss of 10 points.
"Back to the punishment - to me Everton were a sitting duck. I don't know how you gauge it so I guess it all comes down to what happens in future. We've all seen what's gone on with Chelsea under Roman Abramovich or everything at Man City - 115 charges."

Pickford and Mykolenko start
Everton's Jordan Pickford will start in England's final Euro 2024 qualifier against North Macedonia tonight. The Three Lions are already comfortably through the finals in Germany next year as Group C's winners.
Therefore all eyes will be on Ukraine vs Italy, with Vitalii Mykolenko named in the hosts' starting XI. If Mykolenko's side win, they leapfrog the reigning champions into second and will too qualify.

Assan Ouedraogo injury
A bitter blow for 17-year-old, Everton-linked midfielder Assan Ouedraogo, as on international duty he has picked up an injury that is set to keep him sidelined for an unspecified amount of time.
Via Transfermarkt, he was substituted in the first half of Germany's second group match at the Under-17 World Cup in Indonesia. The problem was later found to be a anterior syndesmosis tear in his right foot, the recovery from which will not be able to have a timeframe placed upon it until January 2024.
Everton told they have no need to fear relegation
In a Sky Sports Q&A session, chief football reporter Kaveh Solhekol has made known his confidence in Everton's ability to survive the drop following their points deduction due to Sean Dyche.
He said:
Look, Everton are in serious trouble but the size of the club and its fanbase means that there is light at the end of the tunnel – especially if they can avoid relegation this season.
"Sean Dyche will be using this to galvanise his players. Most neutrals still expect Everton to stay up even with a 10-point deduction, and it would be no surprise if they beat Manchester United on Sunday.
"From a football perspective, Everton have got the players and the manager who can keep them up. You just have to hope for the sake of the fans that they will soon get the right owners to lead them into a new chapter at their new stadium."
The Blues had moved up to 14th, nine points ahead of 18th place, but now find themselves back in 19th and two points from safety.
Everton sent message over 'frivolous' appeal
Football financial expert Kieran Maguire does not expect Everton to be given a tougher punishment should they appeal their 10-point deduction.
Well, it would appear the Premier League wanted a 12-point deduction,” Maguire said. If a new commission is put together, it could involve different individuals and they could have a different interpretation of what they see. I don't think frivolous would be an appropriate excuse to increase the extent of the points deduction.
Mayor writes letter to Premier League over Everton punishment
Mayor of the Liverpool City Region Steve Rotheram has written to Premier League chief Richard Masters over Everton's points deduction.
Mtr Rotherham previously described the decision as “excessive and grossly unfair" and shared a letter on Monday that outlined his “deep concern and opposition” to the punishment.
Everton fan banner at Finch Farm sends Premier League message
Everton fans have aired their feelings towards the club's points deduction.
The Blues were docked 10 points by an independent commission for breaching the Premier League's financial rules, though the club have stated that they will be appealing the decision.
In response to the ruling, a banner aimed at the Premier League has been hung by Everton fans, opposite the entrance to the club's Finch Farm training ground
Duncan Ferguson makes Everton prediction
Everton legend Duncan Ferguson has responded to the club's point deduction.
The former Blues striker, who is currently Inverness Caledonian Thistle mnager, believes Evertonians will stand by the team and is confident that Sean Dyche will steer the club clear of relegation trouble.
"They are the most loyal supporters in the land. They have had a few knocks over the years, to say the least," he told BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound
"They are a resilient bunch, the Scousers down there, and Everton will be well safe this year. I don't know the ins and outs of what the problem is, but 10 points does seem heavy. Obviously, they will appeal it, and hopefully they can get that reduced."
Gary Lineker praises Everton and Sean Dyche
Former Everton striker Gary Lineker has praised the club for exceeding his pre-season expectations.
The Blues find themselves 19th in the table after being docked 10 points but had picked up the same total in their last five league games, putting Everton in a strong position to fight off the threat of relegation, as Lineker explained on The Rest is Football podcast:
At the start of the season, if someone would’ve said. 'Everton will be docked 10 points during the season, will they stay up?' I don’t think any of us would’ve probably given them much of a chance but their recent form has been encouraging enough to give them a decent opportunity of getting out of the mire.
Panel disagreed with Premier League on Everton transfers
The independent commission that handed Everton their 10-point deduction agreed that the club had altered their transfer policy in recent years.
At the start of Farhad Moshiri's ownership, the Blues spent a significant amount on transfers as Everton pursued European football and their new stadium
Alan Shearer gives Everton prediction after point deduction
Alan Shearer has predicted that Everton will stay up this season, despite being handed a points deduction.
Sean Dycje's side were sent into the relegation zone after being docked 10 points but Premier League legend Shearer said on The Rest is Football podcast that he believes the Blues will beat the drop:
“Such is what I have seen in the last five or six weeks that I believe they would have definitely stayed up [without the points deduction] and even with this 10 points deficit I think they will stay up, I think they will have enough, yeah.”

Everton points deduction: campaign hits major milestone as supporters prepare to show disgust
More than 2,000 people have pumped their money into a fundraising campaign to help Everton fans show their fury at the decision to dock the club 10 points.
Supporters group The 1878s, a key player in the vociferous shows of support that have been crucial in recent survival fights, launched the appeal on Friday following news Everton had been hit with the harshest penalty in Premier League history.
The punishment was handed down by an independent commission after it adjudged the Blues had breached a financial regulation. The deduction was met with anger and dismay both at Everton and among the club’s fanbase. Now, more than £30,000 has been donated towards efforts to help Blues express their disappointment at the sanction.
