Everton have been rocked by a 10-point deduction after the club was found to have breached the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules.
The punishment has been immediately imposed, sending the Blues from 14 points and 14th position in the table down to four points and 19th place, in the relegation zone. The news has drawn a furious response from Goodison Park, with club chiefs confirming that they will appeal the decision and are "both shocked and disappointed" at the "wholly disproportionate and unjust" ruling.
Regarding the punishment, the ECHO understands that the club believes a sporting sanction for what the club considers an accountancy issue is wholly inappropriate - and they have not been supported for being open and transparent throughout the process. Everton's latest financial accounts, which were published on March 31, showed a deficit of £44.7million in 2021/22, taking total losses for the past five years to £430m. Clubs are permitted to lose £105m over a three-year period.
