After binge watching ‘The Resort’ in just over one night, the series completely took me by surprise in an incredible and unforgettable way just as The White Lotus did.

To date, The White Lotus is one of my favourite series and while patiently waiting for the release of the third season, I knew I had to find a similar series to keep my White Lotus withdrawals at bay.

The White Lotus became one of the most talked about shows of the year in 2021 and was rewarded with a whopping 20 Emmy nominations. The Resort shares much in common with The White Lotus, even down to its opening few frames.

Last weekend, I was contemplating re-watching The White Lotus for a second time before I decided to search ‘series like The White Lotus’ and that’s when ‘The Resort’ came up in a selection of similar series. The name ‘The Resort’ instantly pulled me in as I immediately made links with ‘The White Lotus’ as both seasons are set at a beautiful, luxury resort in Hawaii (S1) and Sicily (S2).

It is difficult, initially at least when watching The Resort, to not think of The White Lotus, Mike White’s smash-hit series about a bunch of spoiled, unhappy guests and hard-partying staff at a swanky hotel, which becomes the site of brutal killings.

The mystery series ‘The Resort’, created by Andy Siara, was actually released in July 2022 but I have only just discovered it and I’m so glad I did. Without giving any spoilers away, the show stars Cristin Milioti (How I Met Your Mother) and William Jackson Harper (The Good Place) as Emma and Noah, a pair of holidaymakers whose marriage has fizzled out in the most boring of ways; he comments on her bad breath, she rolls her eyes at his love for napping and does internet quizzes on whether she should leave him.

Their indulgent Mexican break feels slightly off from the start, but it then turns extremely weird when Emma falls down a small ravine on a quad-biking excursion, banging her head and then discovering an old mobile phone. She soon learns that the phone belongs to college student Sam who went missing in 2007 along with love interest Violet from a neighbouring resort - one that was destroyed by a hurricane soon afterwards.

Emma starts to play detective and is desperate to get to the bottom of what happened to Sam and Violet, which provides the excitement that has been missing from their marriage, while Noah reluctantly joins her. The Resort navigates between the 2007 version of the Oceana Vista, back when it was bustling, and the destroyed, apocalyptic 2022 version.

Five reasons why I think you will like The Resort:

  1. Each episode of ‘The Resort’ unravels an element to the story that seems to drastically change its course, all the while leading to the same, domineering feeling that there is something greater than us and what we can see.

  2. Both shows feature comedy, drama and a frequently horrifying mystery, yet The Resort manages to be the much goofier version.

  3. It will have you hooked straight away. As much as I adore The White Lotus, in the first season, it took until the third episode to grab my undivided attention whereas The Resort pulled me in instantly.

  4. Each episode leaves you on a cliffhanger, keeps you guessing and wanting more.

  5. Everything just falls in place towards the end of the series and even though the logic is questionable, it somehow feels like everything makes sense.

Even though season two is yet to be renewed by the production companies, I pray that this will not be the case for much longer.
