I was one of the first people to see the Barbie movie and this is what I thought.
Arriving at the Odeon in Liverpool ONE I wasn’t sure how many people to expect at the cinema at 7.40am in the morning. But to my surprise there were quite a few.
Some people were here for Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan’s new film about the story of American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in the development of the atomic bomb, and others were ready to dive into the world of plastic.

This week has been dominated by pink thanks to the hype behind Greta Gerwig’s new film. But Barbie is not the film you think it is.
It follows Barbie (Margot Robbie) and Ken (Ryan Gosling) who end up in the real world after Barbie starts having thoughts about death and bursting the perfect doll bubble.
Barbie is fun and funny. But it is also full of meta ideas, where some of them don’t quite land, feminism, the patriarchy and what it means to be a woman - sometimes messy and not at all perfect.
The film is bizarre and sometimes I didn’t quite know what was happening, but it is also multi-layered and at times laugh out loud hilarious.
Ryan Gosling stole the show as he hilariously portrays Ken’s insecure psyche and his one-liners always hit. Margot Robbie fully embodies “stereotypical” Barbie, but also on her journey of self-discovery pulls at the heart strings when she humanises herself.
Greta Gerwig also touches on the issues of capitalism, poking fun at Mattel and consumerism as a whole with wit and glee.
Did Barbie live up to the hype? Yes it did and it was a joy to get lost in the nostalgia, self discovery and fun of Barbieland for two hours.
You can take a look at some of the hidden Easter eggs in the movie, filming locations and the cast list here. Barbie is out in UK cinemas now, and is being screened at Odeon Liverpool ONE more than 25 times today. You can check out your nearest screenings here.
