A woman has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving after a Mercedes and Ford crashed at a busy junction in South Liverpool.

Merseyside Police were called to Aigburth Road, near the junction of Jericho Lane just before 4.30pm on Monday, November 20, following reports of a crash. Once officers arrived at the scene they found a Grey Mercedes and Black Ford Mondeo had crashed at the busy junction in Aigburth Vale.

Police have now confirmed a woman has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving. Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service also attended the scene and confirmed there were no reports of any injuries.

A spokesperson from Merseyside Police said: "We received a call at around 4.25pm of a collision involving a Grey Mercedes and a Black Ford Mondeo on Ashfield Road, Aigburth Vale. Officers attended and a woman has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

"Road closure are in place and motorists are asked to avoid the area. Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact @MerPolCC on Twitter or ‘Merseyside Police Contact Centre’ on Facebook with reference 720 of 20 November."

A spokesperson from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said: "Fire crews have been called to a Road Traffic Collision (RTC) near the junction of Jericho Lane and Aigburth Road this afternoon. Crews were alerted at 4.27pm and on scene at 4.32pm, with two fire engines in attendance.

"Crews arrived to find two vehicles involved in an RTC, with both vehicles on all four wheels and all occupants out of the vehicles with no injuries. Crews remain on scene making the vehicles safe."

Arriva North West updated its customers to say three of its services, the 60, 82 and 82A were being diverted due to the ongoing incident.

A statement posted on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, said: "Due to a police incident at Aigburth Vale, service 60 towards Bootle will divert via Aigburth Vale, Elmswood Rd, Mossley Hill Drive, and Aigburth Drive, resuming service on Sefton Park Rd until further notice. Please allow extra time for your journey."
