The Liverpool Christmas Markets returned today for 2023 with the city really embracing their festive energy this year. There was a fairly substantial queue when the gates opened some 15 minutes after the advertised 11am opening night.
I went through the entrance nearest to St John’s and, within 15 metres, encountered a burger bar, hot chocolate stand and a bombay grill showcasing just how varied the Christmas markets can be. And, minutes after entering, Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You blasted through the speakers, sparking a collective groan from patrons and staff alike.
It has come to be expected every year and it almost felt inevitable it would be the first tune. Luckily, it wasn't the only song on the roster, and I was treated to some classic Christmas songs like Sleigh Ride and Holly Jolly Christmas much to my delight.

In terms of food and drink, I found them to be a little steeper than last year’s prices. Whether that’s due to inflation I don't know, but I was left shocked by the price of some of my purchases. The ECHO has reported on the full list of food and drinks prices at the market and, while a few of them could raise a few eyebrows, it is almost to be expected at the Christmas markets. It was really nice to see small shops such as The Hippy Hole and even some famous Liverpool scouse.
To get a range of the food on offer, I bought some Baileys-flavoured fudge, just over £3 per 100 grams, a bag of pork scratchings for £3, and the famous Yorkshire Pudding Wrap. The Yorkshire Pudding wrap, which I got filled with pork, deserves a review in itself and I was filled with festive cheer for the entire time.
I know I’ll be heading back to the markets again before they close on Christmas Eve, even if just to get another wrap.
